An international nonprofit organization focused on delivering transformative education through scalable, tech-based learning solutions is seeking a Director of Finance and Operations to oversee and manage all financial and operational aspects of its national program in Sierra Leone. This pivotal leadership role is responsible for establishing and scaling robust systems across finance, procurement, HR, logistics, and administration to support the effective delivery of foundational learning to children in underserved communities.
The ideal candidate will bring strong financial acumen, a track record of success in donor-funded environments, and the ability to lead cross-functional teams in a fast-paced, multicultural setting. Key Responsibilities
Financial Strategy and Management
- Lead the development and execution of financial strategy and multi-year budgeting aligned with national program goals.
- Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger management, bank reconciliations, payroll, grant disbursements, and internal controls.
- Ensure compliance with donor requirements, national regulations, and organizational policies.
- Prepare and present accurate financial reports and forecasts for internal and external stakeholders, including funders and government agencies.
- Support audit processes and ensure timely submission of audited financial statements.
Procurement, Logistics, and Supply Chain
- Design and manage procurement systems and practices that are transparent, cost-effective, and compliant.
- Oversee vendor selection, contract negotiations, and service-level agreements.
- Manage logistics operations, including inbound and outbound shipping, customs clearance, inventory control, and warehousing of tech-based learning materials.
- Develop and enforce inventory tracking systems to ensure accountability and minimize loss.
Human Resources and Administration
- Manage HR operations including staff onboarding, local payroll, benefits administration, and compliance with labor laws.
- Develop and implement performance management systems and staff development initiatives.
- Create and enforce administrative policies and procedures that support operational excellence and prevent fraud.
- Foster a strong internal culture of integrity, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Partner and Stakeholder Engagement
- Maintain productive relationships with implementing partners, government stakeholders, service providers, and donors.
- Ensure timely financial and operational reporting to all relevant external stakeholders.
- Work closely with global teams to align country operations with international standards and initiatives.
- Contribute to the strategic scale-up of the program nationally, offering operational and financial insights.
Candidate Profile
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
- Chartered or Certified Public Accountant (CPA, ACCA, or equivalent) credential required.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in financial and operations leadership, with at least 5 years in a senior management role.
- Proven track record managing finance and operations in nonprofit or international development settings.
- Experience working in Sub-Saharan Africa or similar low-resource environments strongly preferred.
Technical Skills
- Deep understanding of financial compliance, budget monitoring, and donor reporting.
- Experience managing complex procurement cycles and coordinating international logistics and customs clearance.
- Proficiency in accounting software (QuickBooks preferred), Microsoft Excel, and data analysis.
- Experience designing and maintaining HR and payroll systems.
