Your LinkedIn Headline Is Costing You Executive Roles
Charles is a CFO with 18 years of experience. His LinkedIn headline read: ‘CFO at [Company]’. When a headhunter searched for ‘CFO, East Africa, manufacturing, IFRS’, Charles did not appear on the first five pages of results.
The Most Valuable Line on Your Profile
Your headline is the first thing a recruiter sees in search results, in your comments, and in every connection request you send. LinkedIn gives you 220 characters. Most senior professionals use fewer than 30 — usually just their current title and employer. That wastes the single most visible piece of text you own online.
A title-only headline tells a recruiter where you are. It does not tell them what you are known for, which sectors you know, or what you are open to next. And it gives LinkedIn’s search very few words to match.
3 Headline Mistakes Senior Professionals Make
❌ Title and Employer Only: ‘Finance Director at XYZ Ltd’ — accurate, forgettable, and invisible in searches for your specialisms.
❌ Vague Inspirational Phrases: ‘Passionate leader | Change maker | Lifelong learner’ — none of these words are what recruiters type into search.
❌ Leaving ‘Open to Work’ Signals Out Entirely: Senior professionals can signal openness discreetly using ‘Open to Work’ visible to recruiters only — most do not switch it on.
The Executive Headline Formula
[Seniority + Function] | [Specialism] | [Sector or Region] | [Proof Point or Focus]
❌ Before: “CFO at Kenya Manufacturing Co.”
✅ After: “Chief Financial Officer | Strategic Finance, IFRS & Capital Raising | Manufacturing & FMCG, East Africa | Led USD 40M debt refinancing”
The ‘after’ version contains at least 6 searchable terms, signals seniority, and gives a recruiter a reason to click.
Charles’s Result
We rewrote his headline, About section and recent role descriptions, and switched on recruiter-only ‘Open to Work’ for CFO and Finance Director roles. Within three weeks, two executive search firms had contacted him. One of those conversations led to a Group CFO appointment four months later.
5 Steps to Fix Your Headline Today
✅ Step 1: List the 5 job titles you would want a recruiter to find you under. Use the most common one in your headline.
✅ Step 2: Add 2–3 specialisms that appear repeatedly in job adverts for those roles.
✅ Step 3: Name your sector or region — ‘East Africa’, ‘Pan-African’, ‘Development Finance’.
✅ Step 4: End with one proof point or focus area that makes you memorable.
✅ Step 5: Turn on ‘Open to Work — Recruiters only’ if you are quietly exploring.
