How to Pivot Industries Without Starting Over
Kevin spent twelve years in telecom before deciding he wanted to move into renewable energy. He worried his experience wouldn’t “count.” It did once we reframed it around transferable skills like stakeholder management and regulatory navigation. Within two months of repositioning his CV and LinkedIn profile, he was shortlisted for a compliance and partnerships role at a solar energy company that had never hired anyone from telecom before.
Career pivots feel like starting over because they’re framed that way as a loss of everything you’ve built. In practice, most pivots are a translation problem, not a rebuilding project.
Identify your transferable core
Skills like negotiation, budget ownership, regulatory navigation, and cross-functional leadership travel across industries even when the technical detail doesn’t. Before you touch your CV, list every skill you use weekly that isn’t specific to your current sector’s jargon. That list is your bridge.
For Kevin, this meant identifying that “managing relationships with telecom regulators” and “managing relationships with energy regulators” rely on the exact same underlying competency: understanding how a regulated industry actually moves, and who needs to be brought along for a decision to stick.
Build a bridge narrative don’t make the reader do the translation
Your cover letter and LinkedIn summary need to explicitly connect your old experience to the new field’s needs. Don’t assume a hiring manager in an unfamiliar industry will make that leap themselves. State it directly: “While my background is in telecom regulatory affairs, the core skill — navigating multi-stakeholder regulatory approval processes applies directly to renewable energy’s compliance landscape.”
This single sentence does more work than an entire page of rephrased job history, because it removes the burden of interpretation from a reader who has no reason to do it for you.
PRO TIP: Write the bridge sentence first, before you rewrite anything else. If you can’t state the connection in one clear sentence, the pivot itself may need more definition before you start applying.
Get one credential that signals genuine intent
A single relevant certification even a short, well-regarded online course tells a hiring manager this is a considered move, not idle curiosity. It doesn’t need to replace years of experience; it needs to demonstrate that you’ve already started investing in the new direction before anyone paid you to.
Network inside the new industry before you apply
Informational conversations reveal the language and unwritten priorities of your target sector language you can then mirror in your application. This isn’t a minor nicety for career changers; it’s close to essential. Broad labour-market research, including LinkedIn’s own Economic Graph studies, consistently puts 70–85% of all hires as coming through networking, referrals, or internal moves rather than cold applications through job boards.
For someone pivoting industries specifically, this matters even more than for someone staying in their lane. A referral or an informational conversation inside your target field does the translation work that a cold CV, read by a stranger with no context, simply cannot do on its own.
THE MISTAKE WE SEE MOST OFTEN: Career changers often apologise for their background instead of reframing it opening a cover letter with “Although I don’t have direct experience in this industry…” That sentence does the employer’s objection-raising for them, before they’ve even had the chance to be convinced otherwise. Lead with the bridge, not the gap.
A career pivot isn’t a leap of faith it’s a translation exercise, and most professionals underestimate how much of what they’ve already built applies. Every pivot we’ve supported this year had more usable experience going in than the client believed walking in the door.
