5 Interview Tips You Can Apply Before Your Next Interview this April

The moment Marcus sat down, the interview panel liked him. When he walked out 45 minutes later, they’d forgotten him. Here’s exactly why and how to make sure it never happens to you.

The Invisible Barrier Between Qualified and Hired

Every year, thousands of highly qualified African professionals reach interview stage and lose to candidates with thinner CVs. Not because they lack skills. Because the skill of interviewing is entirely different from the skill of doing the job — and almost nobody teaches it.

The 4 Interview Mistakes Most Professionals Make

Mistake 1: Reciting the CV: When asked ‘Tell me about yourself,’ Marcus narrated his work history in chronological order. What the panel wanted was a compelling professional story — not a verbal CV.

Mistake 2: Vague Answers: When asked about a challenge he’d navigated, he said ‘I’ve dealt with many challenges and I always try to find solutions.’ This is meaningless to a recruiter.

Mistake 3: No Company Research: When asked ‘Why this organisation?’, he said ‘I’ve heard great things and I think I can contribute.’ He had done no research on the organisation’s strategy, current projects, or leadership.

Mistake 4: Weak Close: When asked ‘Do you have any questions for us?’, he said ‘No, I think you’ve covered everything.’ The panel’s last impression was of someone who wasn’t genuinely interested.

The Framework That Changes Everything

🔹 Open with purpose: The first 90 seconds of ‘Tell me about yourself’ must position you, prove your credibility with one key achievement, and connect your story to their specific role. Not your history — your value.

🔹 Answer behaviourally: Every question about your experience should follow the STAR format: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Specific, measurable, and real. Pre-build 8 STAR stories before every interview.

🔹 Close powerfully: Ask at least 3 questions at the end. Not about salary or benefits — about the organisation’s strategic priorities, team culture, and what success looks like in the role.

Marcus’s Result

Six weeks after his coaching sessions, Marcus had two offers. He accepted a role at a multilateral infrastructure organisation 52% above his previous salary. The difference was not his qualifications. It was his preparation.

5 Interview Tips You Can Apply Before Your Next Interview

Tip 1: Write your ‘Tell me about yourself’ answer in 3 paragraphs: Present position + key achievement. Career context. Why this role. Practise it until it sounds natural.

Tip 2: Build 8 STAR stories from your career covering leadership, crisis, collaboration, failure, achievement, and innovation. These will cover 90% of behavioural questions.

Tip 3: Research the organisation the day before: read their annual report, latest news, and social media. Name specific programmes or initiatives in your answers.

Tip 4: Prepare 5 closing questions. Use at least 3. Best ones: ‘What does success look like in this role in the first 90 days?’ and ‘What are the team’s biggest challenges right now?’

Tip 5: Do a mock interview. Record yourself on your phone. Watch it back. You will find things you never noticed — and fix them before they cost you an offer.
