Your CV Says Manager. Does Your Experience Say Director?

Wanjiru has spent six years as Finance Manager. She sits on the executive committee, leads the budget for a business with three subsidiaries and presents to the board every quarter. Her CV says she “manages the finance team and prepares monthly reports”. On paper, she is a manager. In reality, she has been doing much of a Finance Director’s job for two years.

This is one of the most common problems we see in senior CVs across Kenya and East Africa. Titles in many organisations lag behind responsibility. Flat structures, family-owned businesses, cost-conscious NGOs and fast-growing companies all produce managers who are operating at Director level without the title. When those professionals apply for Director roles, their CV describes the title, not the work. The panel reads “Manager” and moves on. A strong director CV closes that gap with evidence.

Why Recruiters Read Your Title First

When a recruiter or executive search consultant screens 80 applications for a Director role, they start with a simple question: has this person operated at this level before? Your most recent job title is the fastest signal they have. If it reads “Manager”, your CV has seconds to prove otherwise — through scope, decisions and results that clearly belong at Director level.

Most senior manager CVs fail that test because they are written as a list of duties for the role as it was designed, not as it is actually performed.

The 5 Gaps Between a Manager CV and a Director CV

❌ Duties Instead of Decisions: “Prepared budgets” describes a task. “Set the KES 3.2B group budget and reallocated KES 180M to growth priorities approved by the board” describes a decision.

❌ Team Size Without Business Scope: “Managed a team of 12” says nothing about the size of the business you influenced. Directors are judged on revenue, budgets, sites, countries and customers.

❌ No Board or Executive Exposure: If you present to the board, sit on the executive committee or brief regulators, it must be on the page. It is one of the clearest Director signals.

❌ Functional Language Only: A Director CV connects your function to the business: growth, risk, cost, customer and strategy — not just “finance” or “HR” or “operations”.

❌ Silence About Leading Leaders: Directors lead managers. If supervisors or managers report to you, say so, and show how you developed them.

How to Rewrite Your Experience at Director Level

You cannot change your title on your CV. You can change how clearly your experience is described. Use this structure for each senior role.

✅ 1. Add a Scope Line Under Your Title: One sentence before your bullets: “Reporting to the CEO; member of the Executive Committee; finance lead for a 3-company group with KES 4.1B turnover and 420 staff.”

✅ 2. Lead With Strategic Contributions: Put strategy, transformation and board-level work first. Operational achievements follow.

✅ 3. Quantify Business Impact: Revenue protected or grown, costs reduced, funding secured, risk reduced, time saved. Use KES or USD figures wherever you can.

✅ 4. Name the Stakeholders: Board, audit committee, regulators, investors, donors, government. The level of the people you work with signals the level you work at.

✅ 5. Show Leadership of Leaders: “Led 3 managers and 26 staff; promoted 2 team members into management roles.”

Before and After: A Director CV Bullet

❌ Before: “Responsible for financial reporting and budgeting for the company.”

✅ After: “Led group budgeting and board reporting for a 3-company group (KES 4.1B turnover); introduced rolling forecasts that cut forecast variance from 14% to 4% and supported the board’s decision to fund a KES 600M expansion.”

Same job. Same title. A completely different level of evidence.

Write a Summary That Answers the Panel’s Question

Your professional summary should state the level you operate at, not only the title you hold. For example: “Finance leader with 14 years’ experience, currently operating at executive committee level across a 3-company group. Board-facing, with a track record in group budgeting, capital raising and finance transformation. Targeting Finance Director and CFO roles in manufacturing and financial services.”

Notice that it is truthful. It does not claim a title Wanjiru never held. It describes the reality of her role and the level she is targeting.

What Not to Do

🚩 Don’t Inflate Your Title: Background checks verify titles. Describe your scope honestly instead.

🚩 Don’t Claim Decisions You Didn’t Make: Panels will ask you to explain them in detail.

🚩 Don’t Bury Board Exposure on Page 3: Your strongest Director evidence belongs in the top half of page 1.

The Result: Being Read at the Right Level

When Wanjiru’s CV was rebuilt this way — a scope line, board-level achievements first and a Director-level summary — the same experience was read very differently. She moved from being screened out of Director roles to being invited to Director interviews, because the panel could finally see the work she had been doing all along.

Who This Matters For Most

This gap is especially common for professionals in organisations where titles are conservative or structures are flat — family businesses, NGOs, SACCOs, mid-sized companies and fast-growing firms. It is also common among professionals who have taken on a departed Director’s responsibilities without a change in title. If that is you, your CV is the place to make the reality of your role visible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for Director roles if my title is Manager?

Yes. Panels hire on evidence of scope and impact, not titles alone. Your CV must show Director-level responsibilities — strategy, budgets, board exposure and leadership of managers — clearly and early.

How long should a director CV be?

Two to three pages is usually right. Give your last 10–15 years full detail and summarise earlier roles briefly.

Should I change my job title on my CV to match the work I do?

No. Keep your official title and add a scope line underneath that describes your real responsibilities.

What is the most important section of a director CV?

The top half of page one: your summary and your most recent role. Most screening decisions are made there.
